Problem Areas in South Africa

In light of load shedding, Kusile has been exempted from complying with minimum emission standards which will have a devastating impact on the health of surrounding communities.

Certain areas in South Africa currently have the most polluted air in the world due to our extensive use of coal, making us the top greenhouse gas emitter in Africa.

Coal is an unhealthy and costly energy source, yet government is considering slowing down the decommissioning of coal-fired power stations instead of simply investing in renewable energy.

Solutions

Greenpeace is actively exerting pressure on Eskom and the government to transition to clean and safe renewable energy, aiming to bring an end to the era of power outages.

Renewable energy, such as solar and wind power, is cheaper, faster, cleaner, and safer. It has the potential to create numerous job opportunities and address the issue of power outages, considering the abundant sunshine in South Africa.

Our Independence Is Our Strongest Asset

We don’t take any money from corporations or governments. Our independence and ability to speak and act freely is our strongest asset. We depend on the generosity of ordinary people who fund our work with monthly donations.
